Who's hotter than Twilight's Edward Cullen?

Actors Claude Girardi (MANHOOD) and Elizabeth Tan (MAMA'S WEDDING) tell us more about VAMPIRE MONOLOGUES, one of the two plays in ACTION Theatre's SHOCKS & SHIOK!, a funny and spooky double bill playing in The Room Upstairs at 42 Waterloo Street from 22 Oct till 1 Nov 2009.

As we chat with the two charismatic and jovial actors, they try their darnest not to turn us into their dinner!

How would you describe VAMPIRE MONOLOGUES, the play both of you are appearing in?
Elizabeth: It's a hilarious comedy about a bartender who willingly lets himself be "converted" into a vampire so he can posses "extremely powerful vampiric powers" and become a top standup comedian!
Claude: It's a whole lot of gasps, laughs, fangs, bangs, frights and delights in a tight 40-minute package!

Who should come to see VAMPIRE MONOLOGUES and why?

C: Everyone - but most importantly those who need to escape the drain of the 9 to 5 work routine and have an unexpected laugh out loud. Muah ha ha ha hahahahahhahhaha!
E: Bring the family! And people on first dates. The scream factor would get your partner holding on to you.

What are some of the scenes the audience should look out for in the play?

C: All of them, but specifically look out for any scene involving the deliciously sexy vamp Mary played by Elizabeth 'BOO' Tan.
E: Hey! Don't tell them too much!

Without any prejudice, who do you think looks 'hotter' as a vampire? Twilight's Edward Cullen or you?

C: No prejudice of course, but I think my fangs are 'sharper'!

What are the challenges you've faced, playing the role of a very hot female vampire?
E: Understanding the lifestyle of a vampire. It might seem glamorous and powerful but it is not an easy life. You can't go out in the day. You don't have many friends. You live for centuries. You even have to beware of tooth decay!

How do you like portraying the role of "Victor" the vampire?

C: FANG-TASTIC! Its the best way to sum up how much fun this role has been! However, every role comes with it's challenges. Victor in particular involves the challenge of trying to talk and wear prosthetic teeth simultaneously, 3 hours of waiting as make up is being applied and not forgetting trying to go to the toilet with a cape on!

Given a chance, would you exchange your human life for a vampire's? And why?

C: Sure. I work in theatre so i already barely see the light of day and work nights! Perfect! But can I substitute the blood for Ribenna instead?
E: No, I'd appreciate some wrinkles and growing old. Plus I don't think I could hang around forever whilst my loved ones disappear. And I always preferred a tan.

In three words, what do you think the audience would feel after watching VAMPIRE MONOLOGUES?
E: Vampires are (actually) Nice.
C: A deep thirst! Muah ha ha ha hahahahaha!

Vampire Monologues by web developer Gary Ow is now playing as part of SHOCKS & SHIOK! which also features another play THE PATIENT by Dennis Chew. The play also stars Crispian Chan (THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST) and is directed by Samantha Scott-Blackhall. They seamlessly blend into the live performance on stage and help add texture and layers to the story and characters.

The young man who created those sequences is certainly a new face to watch. Elgin Ho grew up watching films every weekend with with parents in Hong Kong during the 80's. The magical connection he made with those films eventually led him to pursue his dream of becoming a filmmaker.

He has recently completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (Digital Filmmaking Major) at the Nanyang Technological University, School of Arts, Design & Media in Singapore. Here, Elgin talks about his work for ACTION Theatre and his cinematic impulses.

Tell us more about the film sequences that you've created for "Streetwalkers".

The film sequences for "Streetwalkers" form the bridge and back story behind the stage play. Audiences get a chance to watch the characters off stage either before or after the stage scene takes place. They guide the viewers' minds and sets up the premise of the story. By doing so, it's hoped that the film sequences help complement the stage performance and completes any missing part from the overall picture.

What's your visual strategy/direction for the sequences?

When I first spoke to the director of the play, Samantha Scott-Blackhall, we immediately agreed that the sequences should look as raw as possible, almost documentary-like. This was to enhance the authenticity of the story.

I decided to film the entire sequence using the handheld-camera technique, deliberately leaving out any camera moves such as tracking and dollies, this helped to generate a sense realism for the viewers while they watch the film sequences.

I also had to bear in mind that the audiences are watching the sequences as part of an overall experience and the stage play should still be kept as the emphasis to the story.

How do you find collaborating in a theatre project like "Streetwalkers"?

This is my first collaboration in a theatre project and I loved the overall experience. I have worked mostly on film and television projects in the past.

"Streetwalkers" brought out an entire different character in me as I was allowed total creative freedom to approach the story from a different angle. Everyone at the theatre seemed like one big family and I had a wonderful time working especially with the production team.

What is "Streetwalkers" about and why should people come to see it?

"Streetwalkers" is about relationships between human beings regardless of genders. We all seek to find the ideals in life but sometimes, we only need to find ourselves in order to do so.

People should come to see the play with an open mind as it has sensitive characters that all of us can relate to. There is a little bit in every scene or dialogue that would mirror your inner-self.

Some would consider theatre and film two seperate entities, I sincerely hope the multimedia segment of the play could prove to be one decisive factor that would bridge the two art forms together. If you have always loved the two genres, then "Streetwalkers" is a play that would give you a chance to experience both for the price of one!

Meet the Playwright of Manhood

Award-winning Singapore playwright Desmond Sim has written more than 30 plays in his illustrious career. Read on!

Lim Siauw Chong

Siauw Chong has been jazz singing and playing the piano in the late seventies until after two years of performing at the smoky, pre-Singapore Party Girl, hooker-haven in Orchard road’sTropicana, reality suddenly struck him. He then sidetracked to acting as a distraction, initially. There was the bit-part of a Mexican rogue in a Tennessee William’s play as a hammy, tourist-trishaw-gangster in Singapore Sling! - both presented by Singapore’s defunct The Stage Club. These led him to his first paid acting assignment in Raffles, Lion of Singapore, produced by a London theatre company for the Singapore Vic’s sponsored premier.

In the 80s (to defray his school fees for his film-director training at the London Film School), Siauw Chong got a two-year West End contract as the first understudy of the lead and chorus member with Yul Brynner ( The King and I ).

Back home, Siauw Chong happily joined actor, Lim Kay Tong and architect/theatre designer, Justin Hill to found TheatreWorks, not without the unforeseen tribulations. In Be My Sushi Tonight (TheatreWorks inaugural play), London theatre/film director Mike Leigh, stormed into rehearsals - unannounced- to make sure they hadn’t butchered his production, Abigail’s Party through our adaptation. He became TheatreWorks supporter instead.

As for bread and butter, Siauw Chong has mainly depended on his film training and worked in television before starting a company to produce corporate videos and events up. Streetwalkers is intriguing as it is the first time he is playing someone his own age. It is also a privilege to work with a dedicated team who believes theatre is not gender biased or coloured by discrimination.

David Leong

David Leong can be seen in Hong Kong movies such as Naraka 19 (alongside Gillian Chung) and Painted Skin (with Donnie Yen and Zhou Xun). Earlier this year, he completed work on a Singapore movie, Blood Ties, with Hong Kong veteran actress Zheng Pei Pei. The movie is scheduled for a theatrical release later this year.

Some of his Television credits include Perceptions, Okay No Problem, Zero, 7th Month - Red and Singapore Short Stories.

Streetwalkers will be his first stage production since Comrade Mayor in 2003.

Conan Choong

Conan is a graduate from the Tampines Junior College theatre studies program and is currently pursuing his university studies. Conan has been actively involved in various school drama activities and plays. His debut in the local theatre scene came when he was selected out of hundreds of hopefuls to play one of the leads in the popular teenage musical It's My Life.

Subsequently, he was cast in ACTION Theatre's production of Singapore Love Letters, a double bill of two plays co-presented by the National Museum during Valentine 2009. Since then, he's never looked back.

In addition to stage roles, Conan has also acted in and hosted several short films and television programs. His most current projects include hosting Splash!, an Okto TV programme. Despite his young age, Conan hopes to be able to juggle school work with passion and make a positive impact on the arts scene here in the near future.

Who wrote Streetwalkers?

His name is Yak Aik Wee. The young man who penned the award-winning play "Streetwalkers" is a multi-disciplinary artist born and based in Singapore. His work covers music composition, sound design, dance as well as theatre performances.

"Streetwalkers" won the Best New Play Award from Theatre Idols 2009, a competition of new writings presented and organized by ACTION Theatre. The play was originally inspired by the Duck Den Murder and happenings in Chinatown’s Ann Siang Hill.

Aik Wee is also a participant of the TheatreWorks' Writers' Lab Greenhouse, facilitated by Dr Robin Loon. He has completed the National Arts Council's Mentor Access Project (MAP) 2007, a writer-mentorship programme during which he was mentored by playwright Tan Tarn How.

Aik Wee has also written Lester's List, which was staged in Sydney (Short & Sweet Sydney 2009, Top 100) and Singapore (Short & Sweet Singapore 2007, Top 20). In addition, he’s written and directed Live The Singapore Dream and Trash Town, produced by Creative Tree Productions. These plays are currently being staged in local primary and secondary schools across Singapore.

Here's his Playwright's Message for the world premiere staging of "Streetwalkers" by ACTION Theatre:

When do people decide if someone cannot be their friend, simply because of differences in values, perspectives and lifestyles? How different is “too different”? And will these differences cause people to remain irreconcilable, in spite of their shared basic human needs?

In society, differences segregate but similarities unite. This is a play about people and their relationships. I hope you enjoy.

My gratitude to ACTION Theatre and the voting audience at Theatre Idols 2009 for this opportunity to share my work. Thanks to Jeremy Lee, Loong Seng Onn, Desmond Sim, Jeffrey Tan, Tan Tarn How, Ekachai Uekrongtham and my friends and family and for their support, critique and feedback.

Thanks also to the director, cast, designers, technical support crew and administrators for this production of Streetwalkers, for making this production transcend beyond mere words on paper.

World Premiere of Streetwalkers

Best New Play - Theatre Idols 2009

Now playing till 9 August 2009 only!

Don't miss one of the most exciting original new plays to have emerged from Singapore theatre scene in recent years!

Join Singapore theatre pioneer Lim Siauw Chong, seasoned actor David Leong (Painted Skin, Comrade Mayor) and newcomer Conan Choong in ACTION Theatre's world premiere production of "Streetwalkers" by Yak Aik Wee.

Winner of Best New Play Award at Theatre Idols 2009, "Steetwalkers" is a hard-hitting and heartfelt play about three men of different age groups and social strata. Theatre Award winner Samantha Scott-Blackhall has recently been appointed Resident Director of "Revelations", ACTION Theatre's new 2009/10 season of plays with fresh insights and new voices.

Sam's work on the season's opening play "Streetwalkers" by Yak Aik Wee has been drawing rave reviews. Here's her Director's Message for the world premiere staging of the play which won the Best New Play Award at Theatre Idols 2009.

"When a playwright puts pen to paper, or in most cases, finger to keyboard, a world of possibilities open up not only to this storyteller, but also to the directors, actors, designers and crew that bring his ideas and imagination to life.

It is very exciting for me to witness the growth of a ‘thought’ into a world of a play, complete with costumes, staging and all else. Having directed three years of the Theatre Idols competition and their winning plays, I’ve found that you can never pre-empt what story will be told or which play will be a favourite.

But one thing is for sure, there is a growing number of playwrights in Singapore who have something to share with an audience, who have put in the time and effort to commit their imagination to paper. It is a very brave task.

Thanks to Ekachai and ACTION Theatre’s commitment to the development of new plays, these stories have a chance to move beyond the page and on to the stage. In the case of "Streetwalkers", it has been a pleasure taking things further, brainstorming and conceptualizing the weaving together of film picture and stage picture to support the story’s larger context.

Thank you Ekachai and Desmond for letting me be a part of this exciting process of developing new, Singapore-owned plays. Hearty congratulations Aik Wee, for winning Theatre Idols and for dedicating yourself to a vision you so strongly believe in.

A huge thank you to my talented cast of three, David, Conan and Siauw Chong for bringing the characters and text to life; to Elgin, our filmmaker, for providing a layer to the play that hopes to open minds to the ‘bigger picture’ as well as the various journeys in-between (Not forgetting Nicole and John for capturing Elgin’s vision with precision and sensitivity!); to Set Designer Hella for designing a multi-functional space that provided possibilities and assists complexities; to Chia our Sound Designer for hearing the world of this play and sharing a piece of that world with the audience; and finally to Hezan (organizational master) and his busy crew, including the ACTION girls Yanti and Sri as well as Ian Tan for working hard behind-the-scene to bring this play together.

A final thank you, to you, our audience, for giving this new play a chance and for showing your support towards the hardworking playwrights who put “finger to keyboard”.

Tickets to "Manhood" are now on sale!

The most anticipated play from Singapore's most celebrated playwright is here!

"Manhood" by award-winning writer Desmond Sim (Autumn Tomyam) will receive its world premiere staging by ACTION Theatre as part of the company's new season Revelations in September 2009.

Starring Lim Yu-Beng, Claude Girardi, Dwayne Tan and Jo Tan, this revealing comedy about what it means to be a man and living with IT is a must-see for all sensitive women and confident men.

Directed by award-winning director Samantha Scott-Blackhall and produced by ACTION Theatre's artistic director Ekachai Uekrongtham.

Opens 09.09.09 in The Room Upstairs @ ACTION Theatre's 42 Waterloo Street in Singapore.
